The challenge
Whilst the project took longer to complete than was first intended due to discoveries on site the project was successfully handed over to the school who pleased with the newly created learning .space
Two spaces were combined into one by removing a dividing wall, installing a new sliding door into an adjacent teaching space, installing an art sink, new wall and floor finishes, air-conditioning and lighting.
On-site investigations before demolition commenced revealed that the wall to be removed was partly load bearing. This was not evident at the time the design for the new space was done. Existing linings and sections of the ceiling were removed so that the structure became visible. Q then worked with the structural engineer and
architect to come up with a workable solution to remove the wall that did not require major structural works.
A new distribution board was required for the works. The existing electrical reticulation did not match the drawings and several challenges were found during the re-configuration of the electrical supply to the new board. The electrical subcontractor worked over a long weekend to make the changes which required shutting down the power to the school for several hours. The power supply was restored ready for normal school activities after the long weekend.
