Epsom Girls Grammar School - Sports Courts Refurbishment

Secondary School's all-weather fields become focus for community sports

Q refurbished school sports courts at Epsom Girls Grammar School to an all-weather standard. The work was executed within a tight 12-week timeframe to finish by early April 2017 before the winter sports season – and in time to celebrate the school centenary.

We constructed four all-weather multi-use turf courts and three competition tennis courts as part of Epsom Girls Grammar School’s $5.5 million investment in its community sporting complex. The new courts were completed in time for the school’s centenary celebrations in early April 2017, as well as the start of the winter netball season.

This project strengthened our track record with the school as a trusted contractor after having already completed several building projects such as accessible toilet facilities for students with special needs as well as classroom refurbishments.

We harmonised our activities with the school’s daily rhythms to enhance safety for students, and to reduce disruption. For example, we scheduled deliveries for all the day’s construction supplies early in the morning before the students arrived. Noisy, heavy work such as piling and concreting work for the lighting towers was finished during the Christmas holidays.

How we made a difference

  • Minimised health and safety risks to the school community including students, teachers, staff and visitors
  • Liaised closely with the school to carefully plan and manage project activities with the aim of minimising disruption to student learning, examinations and other school activities and events
  • Worked collaboratively with the school to programme heavy engineering and disruptive activities during the summer school holidays, and to meet the project’s April 2017 deadline
  • Carefully managed and supervised specialist subcontractors and suppliers to maintain a consistently high standard of service, workmanship and on-site conduct

The details

As part of this project, we installed new all-weather cushioned surfacing, floodlighting and a specialist Dali lighting control system. The advanced lighting control system, which uses zone sensors to ramp lighting levels up or down in response to the ambient light conditions, was the first of its kind installed at a New Zealand school. Q prepared and set levels for the new fields and engaged a specialist sports field surfacing contractor to install the surface with a rubber infill. We also installed fencing and sports equipment.
