ACG Sunderland

ACG Sunderland School were looking to upgrade their existing facility, to enable them to free up space within the school for further / future expansion of their facilities. A new single story kindergarten with areas to allow for catering, sleeping and both internal and external play areas for the children was commissioned.

The facade consists of decorative precast panels and external timber cladding along with several fully open glazed doors to give the feeling of a large open space. The internal walls have a number of sound absorbing panels which also provide a decorative look and give a sharp finish to the building lines. The roof is a metal finish with 3 large skylights providing natural light. The flooring finishes the building with a mix of timber and carpet tiles in a decorative patten.

Timber piles support the main building which rests on a ground bearing slab with a small section of tray deck installed above the low laying basement area for storage.

The challenge

Unforeseen issues with the existing ground conditions required us to construct the building backwards; working from the top section down and joining the building in the middle at a later stage. This was a live School environment which meant the site had to be kept safe and secure at all times.

An existing damaged Watercare pipe which ran through the bottom half of the site caused several issues. Being asbestos, we had to take extra precautions when removing it, as well as the depth in which the pipe needed to be installed. The whole site also falls within a flood plain area, thus during heavy rain we had a greater amount of water passing though the site (underground).

Covid-19 lockdowns and the associated material and resource knock on affects impacted the programming of the build.
