The challenge
Being a category one listed building, particular care and planning was needed during the strip out to ensure that any items of heritage value were set aside for future restoration and incorporation into the overall scheme.
Auckland’s Historic St James Theatre, which closed in 2007, has been largely abandoned in recent years. Following the sale of the building, the new owners will develop the site incorporating a high-rise apartment tower into one part, sitting alongside a refurbished St James Theatre.
Q Maintenance were engaged to assist with the enabling works to refurbish this category one listed heritage building, to bring it back to life for a new licenced café to be opened in what is now known as St James Lane. Our scope of works included strip out of damaged and dilapidated fixtures and linings, repairs to wall linings, hardware replacement, doors, windows, heavy duty cleaning, repainting, and repairs to bathrooms and kitchen facilities in conjunction with the client’s electrical and plumbing contractors. In addition to the refurbishment of St James Lane, Q Maintenance built a mock apartment for the client’s use as a marketing suite for their high-rise apartment development.
