Waimarie Hospital Extension

This project involved the construction of a new ground floor wing or patient/resident rooms.

Works required include propping the existing occupied and functioning level, excavating underneath while maintaining all services to ensure uninterrupted day to day running of the facility.

Frequent discussion and correspondence took place throughout the build to ensure all parties were on the same page and it was clear to all what was happening and any restrictions around aspects of work.

The challenge

Many challenges were faced due to the nature of the sites tight access being down a long driveway on one side of the building and having all excavation and construction works on the opposite side of the building with the only access being a carpark area under the level one hospital wing which limited machine and truck sizes in both height and length.

The new rooms where constructed with concrete floor slabs, concrete block retaining walls to the rear of the rooms with all other walls being timber framed. There were additional steel beams added to pick up critical support location of the existing level 1 to transfer load down to the newly formed foundations.

A new lift was also installed which meant creating a lift shaft out of concrete blockwork up though the existing occupied area again without disruption to the existing operation.
